- Distribution of 25,000 fingerlings boosts Igacos backyard fish farmingPatumbon, Rojean Grace (Sun • Star Publishing, 2025-03-03)Around 25,000 fingerlings were distributed to 20 backyard fish farmers in the Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos) on February 28, 2025. The distribution included 15 bags of 1,000 fingerlings each and 20 bags of 500 fingerlings each. Rosalindo Marquez, a backyard fish farmer for six years, expressed gratitude for the government’s support.
- BFAR hands Paombong 900K fingerlingsReyes, Jonas (Concept & Information Group, Inc., 2023-09-10)The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has sent 900,000 bangus fingerlings to aquafarm operators in Paombong, Bulacan. The fingerlings were sourced from the Saranggani Fry Finfish Hatchery in coordination with the BFAR. The distribution of the fingerlings was held at the Municipal covered court of Paombong. Local officials and members of the community took part in the occasion.
- Conservation urged to save native catfishDianala, Rex Delsar (Panay News, Inc., 2020-08-29)The bighead catfish (Clarias macrocephalus), one of two native catfish species, was once a popular meal and is found in lakes, ponds, and rice fields across the Philippines. Based on studies and anecdotal reports, it is now found only in Cagayan, Quezon, Palawan, Agusan del Sur, and Liguasan Marsh. The native catfish industry has been neglected in favor of the African catfish. “Most of our farmers are growing African catfish,” said Rosenio Pagador, an information specialist of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC/AQD) based in Tigbauan, Iloilo.
