  • Iloilo prov'l gov't aims to replicate Ajuy marine practices

    The provincial government is considering replicating the municipality of Ajuy’s best practices in marine conservation and coastal protection throughout the rest of Iloilo. The town recently placed first runner-up in the Malinis at Masaganang Karagatan (MMK) Awards organized by the Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources. As a result, it secured fisheries livelihood projects worth P18 million. “We aim to encourage and inspire other municipalities to participate in the upcoming MMK awards. I am confident that our fellow communities are already engaged in initiatives to protect our seas and coasts,” said Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr.
  • BFAR, partners ink pact on marine conservation

    Regional Director Remia Aparri of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) 6 signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with two local government units and other enforcement agencies to strengthen the protection of marine environment and resources in Western Visayas. In the opening of the 54th Fish Conservation Week Celebration in Tanza, Iloilo City on Oct 15, 2017, Aparri cited the importance of preserving, conserving and protecting the coastal and marine resources as the main source of livelihood of the coastal communities. The MOU with Mayor Siegfredo Betita of Carles and a representative of Mayor Milliard Villanueva of Concepcion, Iloilo seeks to create a joint task force that will address the rampant and unabated illegal, unreported fishing activities within the municipal waters.

    Manila graced the 3rd Iloilo Biodiversity and Watershed Week opening ceremonies, Nov. 21, 2016 at the Iloilo Provincial Capitol. The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office led by lawyer Arturo Cangrejo led the celebration. Iloilo Vice-Governor Christine Garin and PENRO DENR-Iloilo Raul Lotilla also graced the opening ceremonies. An exhibit features the environment conservation and protection initiatives of the Province of Iloilo, DENR and its partners, including Central Philippine University, University of the Philippines Visayas, SEAFDEC, USAID, Department of Education, Iloilo Watershed Management Council, Metro Iloilo Water District, among others.

    The Iloilo provincial government is pushing for stronger law enforcement in protecting the Visayan Sea from illegal fishers. “We will not waver to effectively and efficiently enforce fishery laws and ordinances to preserve and rehabilitate the Visayan Sea,” said Iloilo Provincial Administrator Raul Banias.
  • UI law students to help protect Visayan Sea

    Students of the University of Iloilo's (UI) College of Law volunteered to help preserve the Visayan Sea. The college’s In Solidum Student Council presented to Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. a manifesto offering support and help to the provincial government that has made it a priority to combat illegal fishing most especially in the waters of northern Iloilo. These waters are part of the Visayan Sea.
