    In 2008, 34 international companies joined an initiative of the Conference of Parties to the UN-Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and committed to implement corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects that would contribute to the 2010 goal of reducing biodiversity loss. The business and biodiversity initiative encourages CSR on biodiversity conservation, sustainable use of biodiversity, and access to and benefits sharing of genetic resources. The growing awareness on biodiversity conservation and the role that businesses and the private sector can play in this endeavor brings me to the subject of the Agusan Marsh. According to Dr. Jurgenne H. Primavera, scientist emerita and a Pew Fellow in Marine Conservation under the US-based Pew Environment Group, it is home to a diverse ecosystem of rare flowering plants and vegetation, more than 17 fish species, and some 200 species of endemic, threatened and migratory birds.

    BFAR prohibits 'Ludong' fishing for 45 days

    The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Region 2 has warned fisherfolk against catching Ludong or Lobed river mullet during the closed season starting in October. Arsenio Bañares, BFAR-Region 2 Fisheries Management, Regulatory and Enforcement Division chief, said some 40 fisherfolk designated as Bantay Laot members were trained to help implement the Bureau’s Administrative Circular (BAC) 247 declaring a closed season on the catching of Ludong effective October 1 to November 15 and report violations. ”The designation of fisherfolk, majority of whom belong to the indigenous peoples group, as Bantay Laot members is part of the nationwide program to deter illegal fishing activities and protect threatened marine and aquatic species in municipal waters,” Bañares said.

    LGUs told to protect flora, fauna in Iloilo

    Manila graced the 3rd Iloilo Biodiversity and Watershed Week opening ceremonies, Nov. 21, 2016 at the Iloilo Provincial Capitol. The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office led by lawyer Arturo Cangrejo led the celebration. Iloilo Vice-Governor Christine Garin and PENRO DENR-Iloilo Raul Lotilla also graced the opening ceremonies. An exhibit features the environment conservation and protection initiatives of the Province of Iloilo, DENR and its partners, including Central Philippine University, University of the Philippines Visayas, SEAFDEC, USAID, Department of Education, Iloilo Watershed Management Council, Metro Iloilo Water District, among others.

    There is no way attention will be directed at the crying urgency of protecting the coral reefs unless we belabor the issue and repeat ourselves. At the rate coral reefs are being destroyed by human activity or damaged by bleaching due to global warming, it won’t be long before these “colorful gardens under the sea where marine life thrives” die off, never to be appreciated by future generations. Indeed, though the Philippines is “the richest place on earth” in terms of biodiversity, according to scientist Wilfredo Licuanan, he has warned that because of climate change, “we can lose our corals in a matter of weeks, not years.”
