    US trains PH partners in underwater law enforcement

    The United States government, through the US Agency for International Development (USAid), recently trained Philippine government partners in coral reef crime scene investigation and law enforcement. Under USAid's Sustainable Interventions for Biodiversity, Oceans, and Landscapes (Sibol) project, 27 representatives from agencies such as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) participated in the training that focused on environmental law enforcement issues like coral reef crime scene investigation, marine wildlife crime forensics, oil spills, and marine and coastal pollution.

    46 fall in illegal fishing crackdown in Cavite

    Fory-six fishermen onboard two fishing boats were rounded up in a recent illegal fishing crackdown in Cavite, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said Friday. The fishermen were caught fishing off Puerto Azul, Ternate, Cavite using an illegal fishing method called “Danish Seine” or locally known as “hulbot-hulbot”. According to the Coast Guard, “Danish Seine” is a fishing method often used in commercial fishing which is strictly banned in the Philippine waters because of its tendency to destroy and damage the coral reefs, sea grass beds, and other marine life habitats pursuant to Section 92 of Republic Act 8550 (The Fisheries Code of the Philippines).

    Damage from China's reclamation:$109.55M

    Marine resources- including coral reef ecosystems- destroyed by China's reclamation activities in the disputed West Philippine Sea have reached $109.55 million, a national scientist of the Philippines said on Thursday. In his presentation at the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources(BFAR) office in Quezon City, University of the Philippines Professor Emeritus Dr. Edgardo D. Gomez said that an estimated 311-hectare area have been reclaimed by China, citing the March 2015 National Security Council Secretariat data.
