- BFAR completes 15 fish landing centers in WVDe Los Santos, Maricyn A. (Daily Guardian Multi-Media Services, Inc., 2017-08-16)The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR-6) completed 15 community fish landing centers (CLFC) in Western Visayas to boost marketing of fish catch in the region. Joel Abalayan of BFAR-6 Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Office said the establishment of CLFC is a targeted intervention to spur inclusive growth in the coastal areas with high poverty incidence and large population of registered fisherfolk. “The CFLCs will serve as hubs for economic activities, as community center for fish trade and venue for skills training,” Abalayan said.
- Stronger drive vs commercial fishing in municipal waters urged(Daily Guardian Multi-Media Services, Inc., 2015-09-29)An umbrella organization of small fishermen here urged the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and local government units (LGUs) to strengthen the campaign against commercial fishing in municipal waters of the province. Abcede Jardinico, acting chairman of the Negros Occidental Small Fishers Association (NOSFA), said commercial fishing vessel operations, including “hulbot-hulbot”, greatly affected the livelihood of small fisherfolks. Section 18 of the Republic Act 8550 (Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998) states that “all fishery-related activities in municipal waters, as defined in this Code, shall be utilized by municipal fisherfolk and their cooperatives or organizations which are listed as such in the registry of municipal fisherfolk.”
