  • Dead whale shark found inside fish pen

    A dead whale shark was found inside a fish pen in Pulupandan town, Negros Occidental over the weekend. The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Substation in Pulupandan reported that they received a phone call from a certain Ludy Yanson, a resident of the town's Barangay Zone 1A, informing them that a dead whale shark was towed and brought to the shoreline of the area.

    More than 10 dolphins were killed while 15 others were stranded at the shores of Del Gallego town in Camarines Sur province, Bicol Region on Tuesday because of illegal fishing activities, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said. Nonie Enolva, BFAR regional spokesman, said 13 of the 25 Fraser’s dolphins (Lagenodelphis hosei) were found dead at Barangay Magais 1 in Del Gallego on Tuesday.

  • Dead humpback whale found on Aurora shore

    A six-meter long humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) was buried on Wednesday in Dipaculao, Aurora province after it was found dead on the shore by barangay (village) residents. The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said humpback whale of this size (5-6 meters) is a baby or calf of baleen whale species, which is one of the larger rorqual species. The humpback whale was listed by the United States government as endangered back in 1970 after commercial whaling had drastically reduced their numbers.

    “One was hit by a blunt instrument in the nose and the chin. The X-ray showed fractures of the nasal bone. The other crew sustained lacerated wounds in the right hand when he parried the stabs of a bladed instrument which required seven stitches. He was discharged earlier,” Banias said. The incident happened at around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday when the task force spotted a modified zipper or Super Hulbot in the waters of Baliguian Island, the farthest island in Concepcion, Iloilo.
