(BusinessWorld Publishing Corporation, 2021-06-29)The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) should have more big vessels for patrolling Philippine waters, food advocacy group Tugon Kabuhayan said. Perez, a former BFAR national director, said in a virtual briefing on Monday that the agency currently has two specialized ships used in patrolling the country’s waters and for humanitarian missions.
- Fisherfolk want moratorium on boat, fish registrationAraneta, Sandy (Philippine Manila Standard Publishing, Inc., 2017-02-07)The militant fisherfolk group Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas on Monday called for a temporary suspension of some of the provisions on the amended Fisheries Code of 1998 or Republic Act 10654, particularly the Boat Registration (BoatR) and Fisherfolk Registration (FishR), one of the new highlights in the amended Fisheries Code. Pamalakaya said this was another burden for the small fisherfolk who barely earn enough to sustain their families’ daily expenses. The BoatR, according to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, is designed to fast-track and complete the nationwide fishing vessels registration with capacity of three gross tons and below while the FishR aims to register fisherfolk in the country to come up with a national database system.
- Fisheries to acquire 100 new patrol boats(Philippine Manila Standard Publishing, Inc., 2015-06-23)The Philippines is buying nearly 100 new patrol boats to protect its fisheries, an official said Monday, in a substantial expansion from its current fleet of 20 as it responds to poaching by Chinese and Taiwanese vessels. Most of the ordered vessels -- 71 short-range boats for coastal patrols and 27 able to go further out to sea -- will be delivered this year, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources chief Asis Perez said. Tensions have been rising in recent years due to China’s more muscular approach to enforcing its claim to most of the South China Sea, even up to the coasts of its neighbours including the Philippines.
