  • PH seas running out of fish, says BFAR exec
Sotelo, Yolanda (Philippine Daily Inquirer, Inc., 2015-11-07)
More than a hundred fishermen, mostly from Pangasinan province, were out in the West Philippine Sea when Typhoon “Lando” (international name: Koppu) lashed Central and northern Luzon late last month. The sea was calm when the fishermen sailed. But the typhoon unleashed violent winds that wrecked their motorized fishing boats. The fishermen drifted for days in the open sea until they were rescued. The risks taken by fishermen were an indication of how Philippine seas are running out of fish, said Asis Perez, director of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), during the national summit on participatory governance toward sustainable fisheries held last week in Pasay City.
  • Ban on Danish Seine fishing method strengthened
Gomez, Eireene Jairee (The Manila Times Publishing Corporation, 2018-07-13)
The nationwide ban on the use of the fishing device Danish Seine (hulbot-hulbot) that destroys marine habitats has been strengthened after the Department of Agriculture (DA) approved an order declaring mere possession of the material as a prime evidence for violation, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said on Monday. In a statement, BFAR said Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol signed the agency’s update to Fisheries Administrative Order (FAO) No. 246 in accordance with Republic Act (RA) 10654 on the banning of the operation of Danish Seine and Modified Danish Seine in Philippine waters. RA 10564 outlaws certain fishing methods deemed harmful to marine ecosystems.
  • 46 fall in illegal fishing crackdown in Cavite
Unite, Betheena Kae (Manila Bulletin Publishing Corporation, 2018-11-03)
Fory-six fishermen onboard two fishing boats were rounded up in a recent illegal fishing crackdown in Cavite, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said Friday. The fishermen were caught fishing off Puerto Azul, Ternate, Cavite using an illegal fishing method called “Danish Seine” or locally known as “hulbot-hulbot”. According to the Coast Guard, “Danish Seine” is a fishing method often used in commercial fishing which is strictly banned in the Philippine waters because of its tendency to destroy and damage the coral reefs, sea grass beds, and other marine life habitats pursuant to Section 92 of Republic Act 8550 (The Fisheries Code of the Philippines).
