    SEAFDEC'S gab aims to strengthen aquaculture, combat illegal fishing

    Around 60 participants from 11 member-countries of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) gathered in Iloilo City for the 45th Meeting of SEAFDEC’s Program Committee (PCM). Hosted by the SEAFDEC Aquaculture Department (AQD), the PCM meeting brings together delegates from SEAFDEC’s 11 member-countries Brunel Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Also in attendance are senior officials and staff from SEAFDEC’s five departments that include researchers, scientists, and experts.

    Rice and fish

    There was this story of a school girl whose baon every school day was a cup of rice sprinkled with patis or fish sauce. That was all her parents could afford, the story on social media said. The basic Filipino diet is rice and fish. Fish and fish products provide the bulk of protein for more than half of all Filipinos when they eat. Galunggong or scad was the poor man’s fish when I was growing up. But today, the poor can no longer afford galunggong. It is now imported.

    RP's first mariculture park to rise in Guimaras

    The country's first mariculture park has been established in Igang Bay, Nueva Valencia, Guimaras. The park was jointly set up by the government-hosted Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC AQD), Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) and the provincial government of Guimaras. The facility will be launched on July 5 as one of the main activities during the celebration of SEAFDEC AQD's 28th anniversary.

    Asia still top shrimp producer

    Asia has maintained its lead position as the world’s top shrimp producer. Thailand continues to dominate the trade, followed by China and Indonesia. From No. 3, the Philippines has nosedived to No. 8. This information on the shrimp industry was presented by aquaculture expert Wilfredo Yap during the Third National Shrimp Congress held recently in Bacolod City. The scientific forum was organized by the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR), Philippine Shrimp Association (PHILSHRIMP), Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC AQD), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Board of Investment (BOI), and Negros Prawn Producers Marketing Cooperative, Inc. (NPPMCI).

    Milkfish fry sufficiency program in full swing

    Due to the declining supply of wild-caught fry and insufficiency of hatchery-bred fry from local hatcheries, the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center’s (SEAFDEC) Aquaculture Department (AQD) acquired additional 78 milkfish broodstocks to support the government “Bangus Fry Sufficiency Program.” The recent acquisition of the milkfish broodstock will augment the more than 300 being maintained in Tigbauan main station and Igang Marine Station. To date, the AQD has produced and dispersed 16 million hatchery-bred excluding the 380,000 fry produced in newly-built hatchery in Sagnay, Camarines Sur.
