    Mariculture park on the drawing board

    SAEP agreed to spearhead the move during its 13th annual meeting held recently at the Central Philippines University (CPU) in Iloilo City. Along this line, a multi-disciplinary task force will be created to prepare a feasibility study of the project and, once the costs are estimated, to find funding sources. Toward this end, Dr. Rolando Platon, chief of the Tigbauan, Iloilo-based Southeast Asian Fisheries Development center Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC AQD) and SAEP immediate past president, pledged the full technical support of his institute.

    RP's first mariculture park to rise in Guimaras

    The country's first mariculture park has been established in Igang Bay, Nueva Valencia, Guimaras. The park was jointly set up by the government-hosted Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC AQD), Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) and the provincial government of Guimaras. The facility will be launched on July 5 as one of the main activities during the celebration of SEAFDEC AQD's 28th anniversary.

    2 Pinoy fishery experts honored

    Two Filipino fishery experts were honored yesterday in the Giant Steps, similar to the Walk of Fame in Hollywood to immortalize movie stars. Honored were Wilfredo Yap, who conceptualized the Mariculture Park System for sustainable aquaculture in the sea, and Catalino de la Cruz, pioneering expert on aquaculture engineering and integrated agri-aqua farming. The Society of Aquaculture Engineers of the Philippines (SAEP) honored them at the Asian Fisheries Academy (AFA) in Dagupan City.

    RP aquaculture sector benefits from BFAR-SEAFDEC program

    The country's aquaculture sector continues to benefit considerably from a program jointly being implemented by a government agency and a Southeast Asian center. Called Joint Mission for Accelerated Nationwide Technology Transfer Program (JMANTTP), the undertaking was launched in January 1999 by the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) and the government-hosted Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC AQD) based in Tigbauan, Iloilo. The program was convinced to make available technologies developed at SEAFDEC AQD to its host country, the Philippines.

    BFAR assures enough supply of bangus amid Pangasinan fishkill

    The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in the Ilocos region has assured that there is an ample supply of milkfish (bangus) for the region and other regions, despite the recent fishkill in the towns of Anda and Bolinao. BFAR Regional Director Nestor Domenden, in an interview during a fisheries forum on Wednesday, revealed that less than 1 percent of the region's total production for the year was lost due the fishkill. Domenden said the region is self-sufficient in bangus production and can continue supplying the needs of other areas, including Metro Manila, as the region is 127 percent sufficiency.

    BFAR program targets ‘poorest of the poor’

    A total of 3,123 individuals in the Cagayan Valley region will be assisted under the poverty alleviation program of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR). According to BFAR, the figure represents 5.0 percent of the total registered fisherfolk in the region who will benefit from the program called Targeted Actions to Reduce Poverty and Generate Economic Transformation (Target). BFAR planning chief Angel Encarnacion said Target will put more emphasis to uplift the standard of living of marginal fishermen in the region.
