    PHL seeks oil exploration partners in UAE

    The Philippines is seeking oil exploration partners in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with offers of attractive terms, incentives and viable service contracts with the government. The Department of Energy (DOE) and the Philippine embassy in Abu Dhabi have teamed up in promoting energy investment opportunities for emirati investors. The Philippines and China have agreed on a joint oil and gas exploration deal, one of 29 agreements signed during the state visit to the Philippines of Chinese President Xi Jinping in November 2018. The two countries have formed working groups to explore oil and gas agreements in the West Philippine Sea.

    Managing protected areas through PPP

    The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is ready to accept applications for Special-Use Agreement in Protected Areas (Sapa) after Environment Secretary Roy A. Cimatu recently announced the lifting of the moratorium that stopped the awarding of tenurial instruments in protected areas. The scheme was suspended in 2011 by then-Environment Secretary Ramon J. P. Paje, according to DENR officials, because it failed to generate revenue and improve protected area management. A protected area, under Republic Act 7586, or the National Integrated Protected Areas System (Nipas) Act, is defined as “identified portions of land and water set aside by reason of their unique physical and biological significance, managed to enhance biological diversity and protected against destructive human exploitation.”

Globally valued at $15 billion and growing by 14 percent yearly, the ornamental fish trade is aquaculture’s sunrise industry. So why isn’t the Philippines farming ornamental fish? The Philippines—a country blessed with vast freshwater resources, a tropical climate, talented labor, plus relatively serviceable air and seaports—is lagging behind its Asian neighbors. Though it exports wild marine fish, it doesn’t export ornamental freshwater fish due to erratic production.

    DOST launches agri, aqua business hub

    Science and Technology Secretary Mario Montejo recently inaugurated the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) Innovation and Technology Center (DPITC) that will house a modern exhibition hub, a digital library, a conference facility, and a business hub. A new platform for technology promotion, transfer, and commercialization, the center offers the following services: intellectual property protection, technology assessment, licensing, investment packaging, spin-off support, manpower training, market matching and expert services delivery.
