- Iloilo fisherfolk, coastal LGUs oppose commercial fishing in municipal watersSornito, Ime (Panay News, Inc., 2025-01-31)The provincial government, through the Provincial Agriculture Office (PAgrO), is compiling position papers from coastal municipalities, fisherfolk groups, and other concerned parties to formally oppose the Supreme Court (First Division) ruling allowing commercial fishing vessels to operate within the 15-kilometer municipal water zone. PAgrO head Dr. Ildefonso Toledo confirmed that submissions have started arriving at his office and are expected to increase in the coming days. He warned that allowing commercial fishing in municipal waters would severely impact small-scale fisherfolk, who rely on these areas for their livelihood.

Cynthia Villar. During a Senate hearing on Senate Bill No. 2417, which proposes the establishment of a similar feed mill plant in Barangay Bahit, Panay, Capiz, Villar questioned BFAR’s rationale for situating the feed mill at SEAFDEC. The senator, who chairs the Senate Committee on Agriculture, expressed frustration over the decision, emphasizing that feed mills are intended to benefit local fishermen and should be constructed in areas accessible to local government units (LGUs).
- Carles forms country's biggest task force vs IUU fishingSornito, Ime (Panay News, Inc., 2023-02-21)To curb illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, the local government unit (LGU) of Carles organized the largest Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) in the country. A kick off ceremony for the IATF was held on Feb. 13 at Bancal Port in Carles. “We cannot (eliminate IUU fishing) alone. Now, we see that our cries for help have been heard,” said Vice Mayor Arnold T. Betita II.
- Iloilo seeks to revive seaweed industry: Prov’l gov’t to hold first-ever seaweed summitSornito, Ime (Panay News, Inc., 2023-04-12)In Panay Island, the province of Iloilo was a pioneer in seaweed production before it was overtaken by Antique. Due to climate change and the loss of interest among Iloilo’s seaweed farmers, production gradually decreased, according to the Provincial Agriculture Office (PAO). To strengthen the local seaweed industry, the provincial government is hosting the first Iloilo Seaweed Summit this April 14 to 15 at the Grand Social Hall of Casa Real de Iloilo, said Dr. Ildefonso Toledo, PAO chief.

The three-month fishing ban from November 2019 to February 2020 was lifted on Sunday, Feb. 16. The ban covered herrings, mackerels and sardines. Now fishermen could catch them again, according to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 6.
- Don't eat dead fish from oil spill-hit areas, BFAR warnsSornito, Ime (Panay News, Inc., 2020-07-08)The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Western Visayas has issued a warning against eating dead fish in coastal areas contaminated by bunker fuel from a barge damaged by an explosion last week. Remia Aparri, BFAR regional director, said an undetermined volume of dead milkfish (bangus) fingerlings in fish cages were reported in the waters off Barangay Hoskyn in the capital town of Jordan, Guimaras. She explained that milkfish in fish pens are mainly prone to the threat of leaked bunker oil since they cannot swim out to the open sea.
