  • Rare Tahiti coral reef 'like a work of art'

    One of the largest coral reefs in the world has been discovered by a United Nation (UN)-supported scientific mission off the coast Tahiti. Announcing the stunning find UNESCO said drivers has explored large rose-shaped corals spanning some three kilometers, at depths of between 30 and 65 meters.

    Ending the “war on nature” must be part of global recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said in his message for World Oceans Day. The annual commemoration is a reminder of the major role oceans have in everyday life as “the lungs of our Planet” and as a source of food and medicine. Although this year’s theme focuses on their importance for the cultural and economic survival of communities worldwide, the Secretary-General cited a recent report which confirmed that many of the benefits oceans provide are being undermined by human activity.

    Not only Pujada Bay but also the nearby Balete and Mayo Bays have wowed the validators of the Club of the Most Beautiful Bays of the World because of their pristine waters and biodiversity. “We visited the bays in the (last) four days and we were very surprised to see how clean the bays are,” said Guy Ettiene Rousset, treasurer of the Most Beautiful Bays of the World Organization (MBBWO) and one of the validators. “We were very, very surprised.” “We were surprised by what we discovered here in Davao Oriental province,” said Bruno Bodard, MBBWO founder. “It is much more beautiful and clean than we expected.”
