In creating a culture of peace and addressing sustainable development challenges, UNESCO aims to cultivate the generation and application of scientific knowledge among its Member States. At UNACOM, we facilitate access to UNESCO’s international programmes in the sciences, such as the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme, and International Geoscience and Geoparks Programme (IGGP), among others.

Through this sector, the Commission aims to contribute to the following SDGs: 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities, 13 - Climate Action, 14 - Life Below Water, and 15 - Life On Land. With the overarching vision of the 2023-2028 Philippine Development Plan (PDP), UNACOM targets grassroots-inspired cultural heritage and biodiversity protection and conservation, as well as multi-stakeholder partnerships for SDGs promotion.

    US-BFAR partner to improve fish production in the Visayas

    The United States government and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) have jointly launched “Fish Right,” a P1.3 billion five-year sustainable fisheries project aimed to increase fish biomass and strengthen management of marine areas in some parts of the Visayas region. According to the US Embassy in Manila, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) project will focus on addressing biodiversity threats, improving marine ecosystem governance, and increasing the number and weight of fish in the Calamianes Island Group, Visayan Seas, and South Negros. The partnership between the US government and BFAR, an agency under Department of Agriculture (DA) is expected to benefit two million people who depend onmarine resources for food and income, the Embassy said.

    LGUs told to protect flora, fauna in Iloilo

    Manila graced the 3rd Iloilo Biodiversity and Watershed Week opening ceremonies, Nov. 21, 2016 at the Iloilo Provincial Capitol. The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office led by lawyer Arturo Cangrejo led the celebration. Iloilo Vice-Governor Christine Garin and PENRO DENR-Iloilo Raul Lotilla also graced the opening ceremonies. An exhibit features the environment conservation and protection initiatives of the Province of Iloilo, DENR and its partners, including Central Philippine University, University of the Philippines Visayas, SEAFDEC, USAID, Department of Education, Iloilo Watershed Management Council, Metro Iloilo Water District, among others.
