In creating a culture of peace and addressing sustainable development challenges, UNESCO aims to cultivate the generation and application of scientific knowledge among its Member States. At UNACOM, we facilitate access to UNESCO’s international programmes in the sciences, such as the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme, and International Geoscience and Geoparks Programme (IGGP), among others.

Through this sector, the Commission aims to contribute to the following SDGs: 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities, 13 - Climate Action, 14 - Life Below Water, and 15 - Life On Land. With the overarching vision of the 2023-2028 Philippine Development Plan (PDP), UNACOM targets grassroots-inspired cultural heritage and biodiversity protection and conservation, as well as multi-stakeholder partnerships for SDGs promotion.

    Build roads, stop fish smuggling'

    A network of agriculture groups said the government must ramp up efforts to scrutinize smugglers and importers diverting fish products to the wet market that violates existing regulations. In a press statement early this week, Tugon Kabuhayan, an umbrella group of food security advocates, said government authorities should hasten the construction of more roads from fish facilities to markets.

    Bulk-buying of sardines mulled

    Cannery owners are mulling bulk-buying sardines from municipal fishers to sustain their livelihood and keep the cheap prices of the canned goods, a social product that has helped keep Filipino families afloat, especially during disasters and calamities. At a press conference on Monday, Francisco Buencamino, executive director of the Sardines Canners Association of the Philippines, said his group would need the support of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources to support the proposed initiative. “We want to discuss this matter with the BFAR but they are not responsive to our letters. I would love the privilege of having discussions with them. We need to directly agree to craft an agreement, which will also help us avert any crisis,” Buencamino told reporters.

    Quinta' aftermath: Deaths, fishkill

    Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 5, meanwhile, reported an initial 20 metric tons of tilapia valued at P2.1 million were lost. BFAR-5’s Regional Fisheries Laboratory conducted water sampling in six villages — Iraya, Ibayugan, Tambo, Cabatuan, Salvacion and Sta. Elena. Results showed low dissolved oxygen (DO), ranging from 0.18 to 4.37PPM, and very high ammonia (ranging from 7.58 to 10,679 mg/L) content in Lake Buhi. Normal and tolerable ranges of DO are below 5PPM and ammonia at only 0.050 mg/L or lower.
