In creating a culture of peace and addressing sustainable development challenges, UNESCO aims to cultivate the generation and application of scientific knowledge among its Member States. At UNACOM, we facilitate access to UNESCO’s international programmes in the sciences, such as the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme, and International Geoscience and Geoparks Programme (IGGP), among others.

Through this sector, the Commission aims to contribute to the following SDGs: 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities, 13 - Climate Action, 14 - Life Below Water, and 15 - Life On Land. With the overarching vision of the 2023-2028 Philippine Development Plan (PDP), UNACOM targets grassroots-inspired cultural heritage and biodiversity protection and conservation, as well as multi-stakeholder partnerships for SDGs promotion.

    Filipino aquaculture workers join ‘FishKwela’

    Learning online isn’t just for students, it is also for the country’s aquaculture extension workers who listened to lectures and practical sessions on milkfish and mangrove crab culture via an online platform. Forty-eight participants, mostly staff of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) from the different administrative regions, recently completed the FishKwela Training Course to enhance their skills on the hatchery production of milkfish and mangrove crab. The training course was the first technology and commodity-based online training course prepared by the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC/AQD) in collaboration with the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI).

    Artificial reefs go a long way in saving the sea

    Artificial reef projects are being expand in areas of Brgy. Damilisan, Brgy. Lanutan, and Brgy. Gines-Calampitao in Miagao, Iloilo to save its marine ecosystem. Using a P384,000 budget, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Region 6 initiated the first artificial reef project in 2011 at Damilisan village. “The establishment of the project was completed in the year 2013, with the deployment of 250 jackstone-type artificial reefs in Damilisan,” said Eden Nequia, agricultural technologist of the Office of the Municipal Agriculturist-Fisheries in Miagao.
