In creating a culture of peace and addressing sustainable development challenges, UNESCO aims to cultivate the generation and application of scientific knowledge among its Member States. At UNACOM, we facilitate access to UNESCO’s international programmes in the sciences, such as the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme, and International Geoscience and Geoparks Programme (IGGP), among others.

Through this sector, the Commission aims to contribute to the following SDGs: 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities, 13 - Climate Action, 14 - Life Below Water, and 15 - Life On Land. With the overarching vision of the 2023-2028 Philippine Development Plan (PDP), UNACOM targets grassroots-inspired cultural heritage and biodiversity protection and conservation, as well as multi-stakeholder partnerships for SDGs promotion.

    Coast Guard sues firm for negligence over oil spill in Iloilo

    The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has filed a criminal complaint against the operator of a damaged power barge that spilled thousands of liters of bunker fuel into the waters of Iloilo and Guimaras Island. In a complaint filed at the Iloilo Provincial Prosecutor’s Office on Friday, the PCG accused AC Energy Philippines and its officials of violating Republic Act No. 8550 (Fisheries Code) for negligence that led to the oil spill which contaminated 88.8 hectares of mangroves and 27 coastal villages in Iloilo City, Dumangas town in Iloilo province and Guimaras Island. “Let this incident be a reminder to all industry stakeholders that even the slightest negligence can pose direct or indirect threat on the health and safety of the people, as well as living and nonliving aquatic resources,” Vice Adm. George Ursabia Jr., PCG commandant, said in the statement.

    Don't eat dead fish from oil spill-hit areas, BFAR warns

    The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Western Visayas has issued a warning against eating dead fish in coastal areas contaminated by bunker fuel from a barge damaged by an explosion last week. Remia Aparri, BFAR regional director, said an undetermined volume of dead milkfish (bangus) fingerlings in fish cages were reported in the waters off Barangay Hoskyn in the capital town of Jordan, Guimaras. She explained that milkfish in fish pens are mainly prone to the threat of leaked bunker oil since they cannot swim out to the open sea.

    Iloilo gets P30-M agri loan fund

    The Department of Agriculture (DA) has allocated a P30 million loan fund for two towns in Iloilo to help improve the country’s lending for the agriculture sector. Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Pinol said the department has allotted P20 million for Dumangas town and another P10 million for Passi City as part of the Production Loan Easy Access program. The program allows farmers and fisherfolks to borrow from P5,000 to P25,000 without any collateral and a six percent annual interest payable in at least two years.
