In creating a culture of peace and addressing sustainable development challenges, UNESCO aims to cultivate the generation and application of scientific knowledge among its Member States. At UNACOM, we facilitate access to UNESCO’s international programmes in the sciences, such as the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme, and International Geoscience and Geoparks Programme (IGGP), among others.

Through this sector, the Commission aims to contribute to the following SDGs: 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities, 13 - Climate Action, 14 - Life Below Water, and 15 - Life On Land. With the overarching vision of the 2023-2028 Philippine Development Plan (PDP), UNACOM targets grassroots-inspired cultural heritage and biodiversity protection and conservation, as well as multi-stakeholder partnerships for SDGs promotion.

    Fisheries boom hinges on sustainable use of resources

    The Department of Agriculture (DA) expects a boom in the country’s fisheries sector as it continues to engage with stakeholders to craft and implement policies and programs for sustainable utilization and management of aquatic resources. With modernization steps to gain momentum for sustainable and inclusive growth, Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala is positive that efforts of the government will enable the sector to continue providing a stable supply of food, livelihood, and ecological services. Alcala said the DA, through the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), has been instituting measures to ensure that fishing in the country’s waters becomes sustainable and that all forms of fishery resource use provide equitable benefits to stakeholders.

    Protest staged vs new fisheries policy

    Fisherfolk from different provinces trooped to Manila on Wednesday to hold one of several expected “fish holidays” as part of protest actions against the decision of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) to implement the amended Republic Act 8550 or the Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998. More than a thousand fishermen trooped to the Quirino Grandstand in Manila. The protesters came from Navotas, Malabon and the provinces of Bicol region, Masbate, Quezon, Marinduque, Pangasinan, and Cavite. BFAR Director lawyer Asis Perez said in an interview that the agency expects to finalize the Implementing rules and Regulations (IRR) of the Fisheries Code or Republic Act 8550 as amended by RA 10654 next week.
