In creating a culture of peace and addressing sustainable development challenges, UNESCO aims to cultivate the generation and application of scientific knowledge among its Member States. At UNACOM, we facilitate access to UNESCO’s international programmes in the sciences, such as the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme, and International Geoscience and Geoparks Programme (IGGP), among others.
Through this sector, the Commission aims to contribute to the following SDGs: 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities, 13 - Climate Action, 14 - Life Below Water, and 15 - Life On Land. With the overarching vision of the 2023-2028 Philippine Development Plan (PDP), UNACOM targets grassroots-inspired cultural heritage and biodiversity protection and conservation, as well as multi-stakeholder partnerships for SDGs promotion.

- SMPC launches mangrove planting(Concept & Information Group, Inc., 2023-04-22)Consunji-led integrated energy company Semirara Mining and Power Corporation and the Department of Energy have forged a partnership to help clean up and contain the oil spill from a sunken tanker in Oriental Mindoro. Semirara and DoE collaborated with the Philippine Coast Guard, Office of Civil Defense, Department of Health, local government units, and the impacted residents in Semirara Island. The hazardous waste first reached the shores of Semirara Island in Caluya, Antique on the afternoon of 3 March.

Humerlito Dolor wants the entire province placed under a state of calamity due to the oil spill from the sunken motor tanker Princess Empress. Dolor said he directed the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office to prepare a recommendation for the calamity declaration in view of latest situational reports from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and Department of Health.

On July 3, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (PDRRM) Office said the endpoints specified in the Shoreline Cleanup and Assessment Technique (SCAT) were successfully met.

- MMDA joins coastal cleanup day activities in Manila BayZurbano, Joel (Philippine Manila Standard Publishing, Inc., 2023-09-16)The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Saturday joined International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) Day activities in Manila Bay as part of its commitment to save the environment. MMDA general manager Procopio Lipana led the volunteers and staff of various government agencies in cleaning and collecting garbage in the area. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the Department of Interior and Local Government, the Philippine Coast Guard, and the Pasay City government also supported the cleanup.
- Maynilad, TV5, PHL Navy join intl coastal cleanup(Philippine Business Daily Mirror Publishing, Inc., 2022-09-24)Maynilad Water Services Inc. (Maynilad) participated in the 37th International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) drive, which was held simultaneously in different locations within the National Capital Region. The West Zone water concessionaire rallied volunteers from among its employees as well as from TV5 Network Inc., Cignal TV, Alagang Kapatid Foundation and the Philippine Navy’s Naval Reserve Command to assist in the cleanup drive, Maynilad said in a news release.
- US trains PH partners in underwater law enforcement(The Manila Times Publishing Corporation, 2022-07-10)The United States government, through the US Agency for International Development (USAid), recently trained Philippine government partners in coral reef crime scene investigation and law enforcement. Under USAid's Sustainable Interventions for Biodiversity, Oceans, and Landscapes (Sibol) project, 27 representatives from agencies such as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) participated in the training that focused on environmental law enforcement issues like coral reef crime scene investigation, marine wildlife crime forensics, oil spills, and marine and coastal pollution.
- Boracay's restored wetland transferred to DENR, LGUAbad, Roderick L. - Sen. Villar lauds DENR for efforts to help clean and save Manila Bay via solar-powered Sewage Treatment Plant(Philippine Business Daily Mirror Publishing, Inc., 2020-11-15)Recognizing the importance that Manila Bay serves for Filipinos, Senator Cynthia A. Villar underscored the importance of a Sewerage Treatment Plan (STP) to help clean and save the bay. This was in response to the plan of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to build the solar-powered Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at Baywalk area in Malate, Manila. The STP, which is capable of catching and treating 500,000 liters of wastewater per day from the drainage outfalls of Padre Faura, Remedios, and Estero de San Antonio Abad, was inaugurated last July 30 by DENR Secretary Frank Cimatu and MMDA Chair Gen. Danilo Lim.
- Mangrove park outside of planned Bulacan airportOrejas, Tonette (Philippine Daily Inquirer, Inc., 2019-08-24)A mangrove park that was rehabilitated by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in a town in Bulacan province is far from the proposed 2,500-hectare New Manila International Airport project of San Miguel Holdings Corp. (SMHC). Bulakan town’s Mangrove Ecopark is 277 meters away from the proposed SMHC aerotropolis and will not be affected by its construction, according to a certification issued on July 22 by Emelita Lingat, Bulacan provincial environment and natural resources officer. Bulakan residents have been concerned about the ecopark at Sitio Wawang Capiz in Barangay Taliptip, which is north of the planned P734-billion international gateway.
